S2E4: Learning and Growing

Show notes

Generally, the job market has two main actors: Employers and job seekers. One of the main challenges in Western Kenya is that there aren’t enough jobs offered, while the workforce available often isn’t trained on the skills needed to succeed in certain fields. This is certainly true for the agrifood sector, even though it has great potential.

In an attempt to find a solution for this dilemma, private sector players were engaged in selecting youth for participating in competency-based courses that equip them with just the right skills for newly created positions in the same enterprises. For our studio guest Sylvia, this turned out to be a golden ticket. She shares how she took the bold step to go back to school as a mother of three, studied and worked hard to reach where she is now: In a secure, satisfying position as a Sales and Marketing Manager for passion fruit and apiculture, while also running her own growing farm.
